Add an extra column with a simple on/off switch to the image manager to allow an Admin or Users to feature certain manually selected images.
This should then integrate with the joomimages module so it can be set to display featured images from all or only the specified categories.

Josh, yes it really depends on the type of site on which you run the gallery. As a community gallery I agree this wouldn't make so much sense to enable for everyone, but if you are one of only few admins of a large photo site, i.e. a photographer's site, it would be really useful to have this system.
I suppose on a large community site it could be left to a few privileged admins to tag pics in order to feature them, but the absence of this feature is really frustrating. Also the fact that images can't be displayed in a collection of images from multiple categories without duplication...
Hope this can be added in the next version, it doesn't sound too hard to implement but sadly my php ain't good enough yet... :(
Very neat and cleaver idea. The only problem with it is that people could then tag there own photos as "featured" which then would become easily manipulated. Still, for a good honest crowd this would work. In my case I still need Featured Images.
I have submitted another feature request which I think would be even better than implementing featured images:
"Tag based categories" - if it were possible to add tags to images one could display all images with certain tags in a custom category configured to show images of said tag(s).
In the case of featured images, simply tag an image "featured" and show it in a gallery set to search for the "featured" tag. Solves this problem and adds infinitely more flexibility. If you like the idea please vote for it here:
JoomGallery really needs this (simple) addition. Hope it's added too.
Absolutely! This is one of the most important features I think Joomgallery could add. This idea has been on my mind well before this was posted. I really hope this feature is added!
